You don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy quality time together as a couple, but it’s extremely important to find time for one another and make a point of having “date nights” on a regular basis no matter if you are dating or married.
Although life can get busy and hectic, especially with kids, my husband and I enjoy lots of quality time together. Sometimes we go out, sometimes we stay in, but no matter what we do, just being together makes us happy and always guarantees a fun time. If you are on a budget, it can seem intimidating to make date night happen, but it doesn’t have to be.
Don’t break the bank for your date nights! It really is easy to find ways to have those much-needed, special “date nights” using little to no money at all. The experience is the key to happiness, not the amount of money you throw down for it.
Although it’s fun going to the movie theatre, it can also get REALLY expensive between the rising costs of admission and ridiculous cost of popcorn, drinks and snack items while there. There are some great, affordable and even free options instead:
Check out your local listing for movie nights around your area. Often times, there are free viewings of great movies put on by libraries, businesses, parks, etc. Bring your blanket, your own popcorn and you’ll have a great time – for free!
You can also find matinee, special viewings or “cheap nights” at local theatres where the cost is dramatically reduced to only a couple of dollars. Often times, businesses sponsor theatre movies for free on a “first come, first serve” basis. This is a great opportunity to see new films at no cost.
Move night at home! Why not stay in, curl up together with homemade popcorn and snacks and enjoy a quiet evening in together watching classic or new releases on Blu-ray and DVD. This is one of my favourite ways to enjoy a movie. Cheap, quiet and you can even wear your pj’s if you want in the comfort of your own home.
Picnic dates are the best! Prepare salads, meats, cheeses, little sandwiches, and some sparkling cider with a couple of champagne glasses. Take it along in a picnic basket with a blanket to your favourite park and enjoy the simplicity of nature and the quality of one on one time with one another.
I love hiking! This is not only an active activity to do together; it can be really romantic taking in the scenery along the way at the top of your destination. Take time to sit down, relax and enjoy a home-packed lunch together.
We have so much fun bowling together. Our local bowling alley is cheap and although it’s dated inside, it’s so much fun and we always laugh a lot. We aren’t the best bowlers, but we get a kick out of watching each other miss or hit those pins.
Free Local Events
There are SO many free events that happen locally! Whether it’s art, workshops, films, sports, etc., there is so much to take in for free in your local area. It is also a great reason to try new things as a couple and discover fun activities that you might like to actively pursue on a regular basis.
Get your aprons on, grab a recipe you haven’t tried before and get cooking together in the kitchen. Food brings people together, so why not have fun in the kitchen with your significant other creating a delicious and romantic meal that you will get to enjoy together later? You are sure to laugh and have good conversation while prepping and cooking food!
Grab a cone and head to the park to feed the ducks, take a walk and stroll side by side, hand in hand. Share different flavours and let this sweet treat help your relationship grow even sweeter with good conversation and company!
These are just a few ideas for affordable or free date night ideas. There are SO many more! It just takes some thinking outside the box and getting back to basics in the relationship where quality time together and conversation is all that is needed to have a great date night. Don’t shy away from date night if it’s not in your budget. Work around the budget and experience new things together that focus on time spent, rather than money.
Be sure to focus on your budget and live within your means without compromising fun date nights and quality experience. There are always options available to help guide you through and ensure you stay on track and stay within your budget.
